Studio Renshaw is an independent textile art and fashion studio based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2023 by Philippa Renshaw after completing her Master of Fine Arts, the studio was born out of a passion for blending textile art installations with fashion up-cycling.
With a focus on often-overlooked techniques such as sewing, printing, and embroidery, Philippa brings a fine art sensibility to every piece. Studio Renshaw centres its creative practice around the use of a hand-guided industrial sewing machine to produce unique embroidered artworks—designed to be worn, collected, and most importantly, to bring joy.
A longtime advocate for secondhand shopping and mending, Philippa sources high-quality pre-loved shirts and jackets from local thrift stores as the foundation for her fashion collections. Each small-batch piece is individually crafted in her San Francisco studio, using a thoughtful mix of repurposed and premium materials.
The result: sustainable, one-of-a-kind garments that stand firmly against fast fashion.
Philippa Renshaw is a interdisciplinary Artist, Designer, Maker, based in San Francisco. She creates surface patterns by employing an array of techniques including printmaking, textiles, ceramics, drawing, painting, and digital art.
Living in a neoliberal capitalist society, she mourns the loss of quality. In her work she illuminates the relevance of handcraft in a technological world through in-depth exploration of materials and techniques. She operates between risk and certainty.
Renshaw holds an MFA from San Francisco State University, USA, along with an MA in Design Futures and a BA in Textile Design both from Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK.
